Professional Speakers & Presentations.I invited a banker from Wells Fargo to come speak to my classes in April. The bankers ran budgeting simulations and taught a mini-lesson on saving and budgeting. It was fantastic for my students, most of whom knew nothing about a savings or checking account.
I am teaching my students to become responsible citizens and also to advocate for themselves. Some of my students said after the day's lesson, "I want to go this weekend to get a bank account!" |

But beyond the lesson, I worked with Teach for America Staff members to debrief and provide valuable feedback for the Wells Fargo program. For instance, I explained that the materials were much too text-heavy for most of my students, they needed more visuals, and the lesson should better align with the cultural experiences of my students. I advocate for my students by ensuring their needs are met and that lessons are catered for their particular learning needs.

Community Partnerships & Meaningful Presentations

In the fall of 2012, I invited two speakers and former gang members from Homeboy Industries to come speak with my classes. These speakers had powerful stories and strong impact on my students. They spoke about staying on the right path and continuing education. My kids were quite moved, some to tears. I hope to take my students on a field trip to their bakery and headquarters in the Spring of 2013. This trip will depend on funding and administrator approval.
Culturally Sensitive & Relevant Lessons.

I see my advisory class four times a week. In this class we discuss student motivations, prepare our kids for college and also discuss important life lessons. Tuesdays are often my favorite day because it's "A word to the wise" day, where we discuss and reflect on a quote. Recently we used a quote by Dolores Huerta, whom I had never heard of-- and surprisingly, neither had my students! Dolores is an amazing social justice leader, and I was excited to teach my students about the amazing contributions she has a made in our communities. I hope through these lessons they will be motivated to become the advocacy leaders of the future!
Letters of Recommendation.
I often provide letters of recommendation for my students to participate in extracurricular activities and enrichment programs. I act as an advocate for their hard work and dedication. My students deserve to have every available opportunity and if they are willing to apply themselves, I will always advocate for them! Below is a letter I wrote for a student in spring 2012.
